Copeland’s Sports to close Village store today
Copeland’s Sports in Westwood will be closing today, to be replaced by CVS Pharmacy in the near future.
Though there are no clearance sales as students may have hoped, a lot of merchandise has been discounted between 30 and 50 percent, said Sales Manager Javier Sanchez.
CVS Pharmacy purchased the property from Westwood property moguls Madison Marquette in September, and has been negotiating with Copeland’s Sports to buyout their contract, which was set to expire in July 2004.
Copeland’s Sports in Ackerman Union will remain in business, and could benefit from the Westwood Boulevard location’s closure.
The Westwood store’s closure will allow the Ackerman location to expand its array of merchandise, which is currently limited in comparison to the larger Village location.
“It will probably help our sales,” said Sales Manager Michael Reeves of the Copeland’s Sports in Ackerman.
Though Village shoppers would’ve liked to see a clearance sale this week, Copeland’s Sports is in no rush to rid themselves of merchandise; it will be distributed among any of its sixty locations, Sanchez said.
Some student shoppers don’t think the closing of the Westwood Copeland’s Sports will affect them.
“Why would I shop there? It’s the same stuff (as in the Ackerman location),” said second-year English student Scott Snider.
