Three Bruins to head to Greece with U.S. Olympic water polo team

Senior Brett Ormsby has been named to the Olympic water polo roster along with former Bruins Adam Wright and Brandon Brooks. Ormsby led the Bruins with 70 goals in 2003. After losing two consecutive shootouts, Team USA finished in last place at the FINA super finals this weekend in Long Beach.

MEN’S SOCCER: Sophomores Kiel McClung and Chad Barrett are playing for the U.S. Under-20 National Team in the 2004 Milk Cup taking place in Northern Ireland. Barrett scored a goal in the team’s opening game, a 2-2 tie against Denmark on Saturday. The U.S. plays Turkey today and Wales on Wednesday in group play.

MLS SOCCER: Former Bruins Frankie Hejduk, Jimmy Conrad and Kevin Hartman have been selected to the 2004 MLS All-Star teams. Hejduk, a defender for the Columbus Crew, was named a starter, as Conrad, a defender for the Kansas City Wizards, and Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Hartman will be reserves. Galaxy coach and former longtime UCLA head coach Sigi Schmid will coach the Western Conference team.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Junior Jill Oakes has been named to the U.S. Under-21 Women’s National Team. The squad will participate in the 14th Annual Nordic Cup later this week in northern Europe.

WOMEN’S GOLF: Former UCLA golfer Bridget Dwyer won a pair of matches at the 74th Women’s Trans National Tournament in Virginia before falling to Blythe Worley in the quarterfinals in 21 holes. Two-time All-American Charlotte Mayorkas led the United States to a 32-28 victory over Japan in the finals of the Collegiate Golf Championship Friday in Ichihara, Japan. Mayorkas, who shot a final round of 67, was voted co-MVP of the event along with Japan’s Miki Saiki UCLA’s O.D. Vincent and Carrie Forsyth served as coaches for the U.S. teams.

MEN’S GOLF: Sophomore Chris Heintz finished 9th at the Players’ Amateur tournament last week in Blufton, S.C. He posted an overall score of 285, five strokes behind champion Aron Price, who finished at eight under. Recent graduate Steve Conway (+3), sophomore Peter Campbell (+6), senior John Poucher (+7) and recent graduate Roy Moon (+20) also competed in the event.

FOOTBALL: The St. Louis Rams signed former Bruin linebacker Brandon Chillar to a three-year contract on Thursday. Chillar, a fourth-round draft pick, played in 49 games in his four year career, finishing with 255 tackles during that span. He recorded 133 in his senior year, the highest by any Bruin since 1989, and was named to the 2003 All-Pac 10 Team.

MERCEDES-BENZ CUP: They lived up to their billing. The No.1-seeded doubles team of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan cruised its way to the doubles title, defeating Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley 6-3, 7-6 (6) in Sunday’s final. The Bryans only dropped one set for the entire tournament.
