Editorial: Education shouldn’t be only for citizens
Congress let its 108th session come to an end, unfortunately, without addressing the education of undocumented students.
The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, often called the DREAM Act, would make undocumented students eligible for federal and state financial aid and loans. Provided they had lived in the U.S. for five years, it would also allow undocumented students to apply for legal status.
There is no doubt that issues relating to illegal immigration are complex, but the answer should be clear when it comes to educating those already within our borders.
Education is a critical function of government benefiting everyone – regardless of their immigration status.
Those who argue against educating undocumented students ignore the positive impact education can have, not just for the individuals, but also for their families and the greater population.
Immigration is an issue which cannot be ignored. When Congress meets again it should reintroduce a measure that provides an educated future for this country and its people – no matter their background.
