“Infinite Crisis”
DC Comics
In a year full of comic book craziness – Marvel Comics’ epic “Civil War” pitted Iron Man against Captain America and unveiled Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world, and DC Comics’ “52” told a year-long story every week in real time, “24”-style – the best major event was DC’s “Infinite Crisis.”
Aside from providing the company with a much-needed creative reboot for characters such as Superman and Batman, the story also played to DC’s strengths: Batman’s inner turmoil and brilliance as a detective, Superman’s nobility and sense of purpose and Wonder Woman’s torn allegiance to humanity and to her mythic heritage.
It was a space opera on a grand scale, with unexpected deaths, destruction and plot twists, but one that never felt forced or done for shock value.
With things looking good for DC in 2007, here’s to “Infinite” and beyond.
