Stanford housing officials have begun a positively progressive discussion on co-ed rooms in residence halls.

Universities should allow students who request roommates of the opposite sex to cohabit with their friends.

This is not to say that fleeting college relationships are reasons for cohabitation; the housing department will have room change requests coming out of their ears. But if opposite-gender friends want to room together and have mulled over the possible effects, then their decision should be supported by university officials.

If a university policy were to be instated, we would ask that students have the option to request roommates of the opposite sex, so as long as both parties mutually want to take this venture.

If both are willing, then the university should take no issues. However, for random roommate assignments, females should be roomed with females, and males with males, to avoid any alternative dating techniques.

But one should not take roommate situations lightly and remember that sharing a room for an entire year can be challenging. Thus, students in relationships should be cautious, even if they feel that their relationship will last.

At this stage in our lives, we should be trusted to make appropriate decisions in our lives, such as our rooming situations.
