Speaks Out

Thursday, 5/29/97 Speaks Out "If there were a cure for AIDS, do you think people would take less precautions when having sex?"

Liberty Huang: I think they would. People seem to like premarital sex, and AIDS is probably the only thing that keeps people using condoms. With AIDS, people are less likely to have one-night stands, and they're probably more careful about who they sleep with. Kristin Korbacher: I definitely think that there would be people (who) would use less precautions, like condoms, because AIDS' deadliness is probably the biggest factor in keeping people scared of unsafe sex. Sex in general is looked at differently and more risky. Robyn Lee: Definitely. AIDS is so publicized that it is probably one of their main fears when it comes to sex. Stan Park: Definitely in my opinion, people are thinking about what they are doing. It has become a highly politicized issue with great awareness. Hrair Kerametlian: They wouldn't take precautions; they would just keep on having more sex. Personally, I know people who are not being very protective. There is still that myth that "It's not going to happen to me." The work for AIDS awareness doesn't seem to be working. Vidul Pakash: I think they would. People probably abstain from sex more from fear of AIDS more than out of morality. Condoms are probably more popular now than before AIDS and public-information campaigns.
