UCLA takes doubles title in Washington
The UCLA women’s tennis team returned from the Pac-10 Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Washington this past weekend with mixed results.
Freshman Shilpa Joshi and sophomore Anya Loncaric defeated USC’s Melissa Esmero and Maureen Diaz 8-4 to claim the Flight II-doubles title.
In the Flight I doubles group, UCLA’s Jackie Carleton and Laura Gordon advanced to the semifinals before falling to Washington’s All-American team of Claire Carter and Darija Klaic. The Bruins’ other Flight I doubles team, Sarah Gregg and Suzi Wild lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions, USC’s Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer.
In singles, the Bruins did not fare as strongly, failing to reach beyond the quarterfinal round in any of the four flights. Second seed Sara Walker was upset in the quarterfinals by Oregon’s Daria Panova 6-1, 7-6 (2).
Carleton, the other Flight I singles player, battled and upset Cal’s 12th ranked Raquel Kops-Jones 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4), but was unable to get past Arizona’s Emilie Schibot in the quarterfinals.
In Flight II, Gregg won her first-round match, but lost to the eventual finalist, Dea Sumantri of Washington, in the next round. Both Bruins in Flight III, Anya Loncaric and Laura Gordon, advanced to the quarterfinals.
The three freshmen playing in Flight IV, Nina Yaftali, Shilpa Joshi, and Kate Jolson all lost in the first round.
