Ask the Editors
Removing names from archives
Posted January 22, 2008
Daily Bruin editors are frequently asked by people quoted in older articles to remove those articles completely from our online archives.
Usually, the concerned individual will request to have the article de-listed from Google and other search engines so that when their name is searched for, the Daily Bruin article they are quoted in is no longer available. The most commonly cited reason for this is that the quote no longer reflects what they may currently believe, so they fear that it may be an inaccurate portrayal of their beliefs.
To preserve the integrity of the online archives, The Bruin has yet to satisfy a request of this nature to date.
Like most professional newspapers, the only amendments made to an article after being published are to make corrections, as the paper would normally do in its print medium.
We encourage sources for future articles to keep in mind that, upon agreeing to go on record, they are consenting to the use of their opinion and insight within the context of an article. This is standard practice among all professional media.
Daily Bruin articles are also cited and indexed on other Web sites, so even if The Bruin changes it’s policy and removes older articles from its archives, it is conceivable that articles will continue to show up on search engines.
We hope that sources for future articles will continue to share their insight with our journalists because their contributions serve as historical pieces of information for the Daily Bruin readership and the global online community.
