Comic-Con 2007

Joss Whedon

Posted July 30, 2007

Joss Whedon, the executive producer of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and other sci-fi series, announced that he was in talks with the BBC about “Ripper,” the Buffy spin-off about the life of Rupert Giles in England. He also discussed a script he cowrote called “Cabin in the Woods,” which according to him is the horror movie to end all horror movies. And though he didn’t say much, he mentioned that a Spike movie is finally taking flight.

The discussion mostly focused on the season eight comic book version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the special edition DVD of “Serenity.” But as the floor was opened to questions, it got a bit chaotic and downright absurd as fans began to shower him with homemade gifts.

One fan professed her love for Whedon because of his feminist themes and then proceeded to say Whedon was her master, which was confusing. Another girl asked Whedon if he remembered meeting her a couple years ago when she was wearing her silver dress – he didn’t.

Whedon also revealed that the character he most regrets killing was Tara (Willow’s girlfriend from “Buffy”), although the entire audience was screaming Walsh (from “Firefly”). The character he most loved to write for was Illyria (from “Angel”). And, sadly, there will be no “Angel” movie.

However, the best part was when someone asked Whedon if he would direct “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (he’s not and hasn’t even been in talks), to which the crowd collectively started panicking that the person asking the question would spoil the seventh book.
