By The Asian Pacific Coalition at UCLA
On Sunday, an alarming video was re-posted on YouTube from the Facebook account of a UCLA student, Alexandra Wallace. The video, titled “Asians in the Library,” chronicled the student’s racist tirade against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities at UCLA. The resulting reaction reveals an alarmingly dangerous campus climate and an underlying current of racism and prejudice still vibrantly alive in America.
Her decision to state such culturally insensitive remarks via a forum as public as a Facebook video is disturbing. What gives her the audacity to record such a video? Perhaps she did not expect anyone to react. Perhaps she did not expect APIs to fend for themselves.
Well think again. We are responding, and by the numbers.
As evidenced by the responses of outrage and hurt from our community, it is clear that this student’s comments can be considered a hate speech, an act of discrimination, harassment and profiling.
However, we must address the many ignorant comments stemming from our own community in reaction to Wallace’s comments. While we condemn this student’s remarks as not only ignorant and offensive but hateful as well, we believe that we as a community can do better than to resort to the student’s tactics of throwing out divisive words, which only perpetuate a culture of racism and sexism on both sides.
We will not use our strength as a community to attack this individual but rather we will use this event to grasp at an understanding of campus climate: it is clear that racism, sexism, bigotry, and hatred still exist in our universities and beyond.
As a community, we should respond with the grace, sensitivity and civility afforded us through the manners we learned from our parents, and their parents before them.
Hence, as a community, we demand the following:
1) We call for a public apology from Alexandra Wallace. Her words and actions are not in line with the UCLA Student Code of Conduct.
2) We call for UCLA to take the appropriate disciplinary measures befitting of Wallace’s violation against the UCLA Student Code of Conduct and UCLA’s Principle of Community
3) We call for UCLA to issue a statement addressing this incident. UCLA must demonstrate its commitment to a culture of diversity, respect, tolerance, and acceptance for all communities by standing against such acts.
4) We call for the UCLA Academic Senate to pass a requirement in the general education curriculum grounded in the UCLA Principles of Community.
Let this incite an honest discussion on what it truly means to be a community founded upon mutual respect. Do not turn this into a riot. Do not turn this into an attack. We are better than that. Allow us to come together in solidarity and address the matter where it truly stems: as a reflection of the gross misunderstanding of our communities and the hatred that grows from it.

I strongly support this article.

Great article! Wow, am I the first to comment?
GREAT article. Well written. I certainly hope to see UCLA take definitive action
bravo
I thought this was well written. I also think it is important to know that racism does still and probably always will exist. I’m not surprised nor shocked by the rant.
Huzzah!!!
Ms. Wallace is not a child. And she didn’t make a mistake. She had to say what she always wanted to say. It seems she’s always been extremely annoyed by these hordes of Asians. In other words she doesn’t like these many Asians attending an American university named UCLA. In her book Asians can’t be Americans That’s called “Racism”. She doesn’t belong here. She should go somewhere else for her college education.
I agree even though I don’t go to that school
Forgive her she just doesn’t know better.
Jesus Christ will deal with her.
First, off I would like to thank the writers of this article for such a fantastic job. Although I am African-American and not a UCLA Bruin, I strongly feel that Ms. Wallace’s comments were disrespectful and distasteful. Sadly, her comments reflect the depth of racism that is still prevalent in our society, as well as the fact that we need to continue to educate our young people about the world in which they live. As they go through life, they are going to encounter people of different races, ethnicities, religions, various sexual orientations, individuals with disabilities, etc. Furthermore, I seriously feel that she has jeopardized her academic and professional future, given the fact that most companies, businesses, and organizations, may google her name and see that she caused and is associated with being racist and making racist statements. In turn, she may not get certain jobs and promotions because of her “views” and different “perspectives” about other racial and ethnic groups. This incident clearly illustrates why it is essential that all individuals fight to keep ethnic studies in all universities, as well as have programs and forums that address various community-cultural related issues. I hope some of the things that Ms. Wallace learns from this incident is to definitely think before she speaks or post anything up on the internet, because as she is seeing, it can and will almost, and is biting her in the rear. Furthermore, I pray that she make it a point to learn more about various racial and ethnic groups, as well as issues pertinent to their respective cultural communities. Lastly, I pray that she learns the difference between addressing an issue (such as people talking loud on cell phones-which is in and of itself annoying), and attacking and insulting a group of people because of their race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference/orientation, class, and disability. If anything, I strongly believe that all people, including Ms. Wallace, can learn from this incident is to follow the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you.”
very well written!
I hope to see her expelled for her actions. I don’t attend UCLA but it’s shameful to see such behavior. UCLA does not need students like her.
I know her last name is Danish but her video reminds me of the anti-German sentiments when Benjamin Franklin ranted about how the Germans don’t speak English and not being Englishman and now it’s over 200 years later this girl is doing the same thing what Benjamin did to her own kind. UCLA should take Action. If not, it won’t go well with its Asian American community.
Fantastic article. I will be keeping a watch on this situation and hope that UCLA will take appropriate action upon Ms. Wallace. Thank you for writing this article ‘The Asian Pacific Coalition at UCLA.’

I approve the above message. Very well written and to the point. A lot of the ignorant comments thrown back at Wallace is just noise. Once it settles down, the message should be clear: Intolerance has no place in this world.
Very well written article. As an Asian American UCLA alumna, I was very shocked when I heard of the video over the radio. Even more offended when I saw the video myself, and I don’t even attend the school anymore. Imagine how current Asian Americans students feel!
Alexandra shouldn’t have singled out a race in her video, a general “students should be quiet in the library” rant would have been fine. But once you single out a race, you’re asking for them to turn against you.
I don’t believe threats should be made at her, that just stoops us to her level. However, I do expect a lot from a UCLA student, especially a third year student. There should be much more common sense than to publicly rant about such a topic. She gave herself and UCLA a bad reputation. And she’ll see the consequences once she steps out into the working world as employers google potential candidates names.
With all that said, good job with the article. I hope all demands are met.
The “civility” of Asians is the reason why they get picked on so much, moreso than blacks and latinos, which is more behind the scenes (i.e. when none of them are about). With asians you can have a white go up to them, offend them and nothing will be done. The white will have gotten away with it… why? Because the asians are not responding. Maybe a bit of vocal and physical retaliation will work wonders in the long term… think Nash’s Game Theory.
Good article I guess…why is everybody so offended…if you dont like it great…dont watch it…if porn offends you, dont watch porn…who cares I guess, she is not hurting anybody, she is annoyed by some people in the library, but who cares!!! not even worth everyones time…
Punishing Ms. Wallace isn’t the point. Having a diversity requirement to prevent incidents like this and create a safer more inclusive campus climate is.
In all likely hood the bad attention she’s going to get from this is going to keep her from being hired, going to the grad school of her choice, etc. So even if the school leaves her alone with her shame I’ll be fine with it.
If UCLA is serious about making our campus a better place they need to institute that diversity requirement now because we’re the only UC that doesn’t have one.
GO BRUINS!
I am literally pounding the table and howling with laughter at her. Aww, the poor widdle cheerleader can’t take it. LOL! I read somewhere online she “…slammed Asian students for talking on the cell phones in the library, saying, “I’ll be in, like, deep into my studying, into my political science theories and arguments and all that stuff…” Yeah I’ll bet you were, genius at work! Back off everyone! LOL! You in-crowd “beautiful people” types should just not speak and sit there and look good, that’s all you’re good for. Or maybe someday your useless biological matter will be used for fossil fuels, maybe that’s all you’re good for.
A junior in college should know better. It doesn’t surprise me that people are still being raised this way. I think she should face some disciplinary actions.
The rest of us should exercise what we preach and show some tolerance of ignorance.
Still. Extremely shameful to UCLA and its community.
@ Daneil
And we are annoyed of her ignorance. So we rant. If her racist remarks are not “hurting” anyone. We’re not “hurting” her with ours.
As with your porn analogy, If she’s offended by people on their cell phone, then use ear plugs right? Or better yet, study someowhere else. Her video isn’t about complaing about people on their cell phones, it targets Asians. And that’s what everyone is offended by. I am sure people of all backgrounds talk or text in library. And not only “American” libraries, I’m sure the same rule holds for all nations. She would have been fine if she was just complaining about students at Powell Library. Should have never mentioned Asians or degrade their values and culture.
To set an example, she should be expelled.
In the list of demands, I think the author forgot the need to address the insensitive response to this student’s comments. Yes, they were inexcusable, but the death threats and other outrageous acts are far worse. The university needs to address the situation as a whole, as it is clear that UCLA has fundamentally failed to teach cultural and social acceptance. I don’t know if I will ever think of UCLA the same way again, due to the insensitivity of a large portion of the student body.

@Ryan Mooney
Not all of it came from the UCLA student body. It was a nationwide, if not wordwide, response to her rant.
The woman has a right to express her opinion. If you don’t like what she has to say, then don’t listen to her. As for the University taking disciplinary action against her, if they do so she should sue them for as much as she can get for violating her First Amendment rights.
