A UCLA student has received multiple death threats in response to her video “Asians in the Library,” which was posted Friday.

In the video, third-year political science student Alexandra Wallace makes a number of disparaging comments about Asian students.

“The problem is these hordes of Asian people that UCLA accepts into our school every single year,” Wallace said in the video.

She described her annoyance at Asian students talking noisily in the library, and imitated one student with the phrase, “Ohhhh. Ching chong ling long ting tong.”

The video quickly went viral and, despite being removed by Wallace on Sunday, has since been reposted under different accounts on YouTube and other websites.

[ Wallace contacted university police early Sunday evening after receiving numerous threats via e-mail and phone, said UCPD spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein. UPDATED: UCPD cannot confirm or deny that any of the threats were death threats. ]

Police advised her to take a number of precautions and are currently working to ensure her safety, Greenstein said.

“If she’s received a death threat, I find that as deplorable as her original YouTube video. If this is the response of students on campus, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students.

Within three days, the video provoked a tremendous response, both inside and outside the UCLA community.

Speaking Sunday night, a university spokesman called the video “repugnant.”

Wallace sent a statement to the Daily Bruin early Monday morning apologizing for her remarks.

“Clearly the original video posted by me was inappropriate,” she said in the statement. “I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would. I’d like to offer my apology to the entire UCLA campus. For those who cannot find it within them to accept my apology, I understand.”

On Monday afternoon, Chancellor Gene Block sent an e-mail to students and released a video response to Wallace’s video. He said her views are in no way reflective of the UCLA community as a whole.

“I am appalled by the thoughtless and hurtful comments of a UCLA student posted on YouTube,” Block said in the statement. “Speech that expresses intolerance toward any group of people … is indefensible and has no place at UCLA.”

Students also took to various forms of social media, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Numerous responses to the video were posted on YouTube, including parodies and dubstep versions of the original recording. One parody clip surpassed 200,000 views as of Monday night, illustrating the original video’s momentum and the sheer volume of responses.

Hundreds of comments were also posted on Chancellor Gene Block’s Facebook page.

A Facebook group called “Asians in the Library – Alexandra Wallace” lists Wallace’s e-mail and asks students to report her to the dean.

A Facebook user under the name “Alexandra Wallace” posted an apology on Block’s Facebook page on Sunday night. However, Wallace said she did not write the posts, stating that she does not have a Facebook account.

Phil Gussin, Wallace’s political science professor, said Wallace contacted him with concern about how she would take her finals.

Gussin said Wallace told him that police advised her to reschedule her final exams in light of death threats she received and information posted online that listed her class schedule and exam locations.

Greenstein said police are working with Wallace to determine when she will take her finals.

Gussin said he is concerned for Wallace’s safety and is frustrated at the violent response some people have expressed.

“What Wallace did was hurtful and inexcusable, but the response has been far more egregious,” Gussin said. “She made a big mistake, and she knows it, but … they responded with greater levels of intolerance.”

Naples said the university will examine Wallace’s video to see if it violates any part of the student code of conduct. But he cautioned that the code does not usurp the authority of the First Amendment.

“(Wallace) has made judgments about a certain race, and people have made judgements about her, but we’ve got to make the correct judgments in the dean’s office, and in order to do that we need to know everything first,” Naples said.

Well written, well presented. Waiting to see how this will develop…although what she said was uncalled for and hurtful, on the hateful speech continuum, it’s fairly mild. Poorly presented, rudely worded, racist in orientation, it essentially is a complaint about people talking on phones in the library. She’s not advocating hatred, murder, or removal, all far more threatening to diversity and acceptance. The remarks are stupid, but should she be crucified for being ignorant? I vote for rehabilitation. The public humiliation, death threats, and (inter)national infamy are quite enough given the scope of her crime.

What an embarrassment to the UCLA community. When people talk in the library – regardless of what color they are – I just tell them to please be quiet. That is all it takes. I hope UCLA expels her. It is ironic she is making fun of tsunami victims and she is complaining about her safety during finals.

The threatening harassment against Wallace needs to stop! Those that respond with such threats are no better than Wallace herself.

Clearly, she’s already gained some sympathy from professors (ex. “greater levels of intolerance…” really?). But really, exactly what was Wallace expecting when she released such inflammatory remarks?

Nonetheless, going to the police was a good start; but she has to realize the implications of her actions. Not only are police resources going to be utilized to ensure her protection, but busy professors will need to adjust their schedules to accommodate the final exam at the convenience of Wallace.

People need to understand the consequences of their their actions. Just because you have the right to do something, it doesn’t mean that it is most pragmatic. This is an especially true concept for someone who is allegedly studying Political Science… I would expect much better diplomacy and understanding from a PS student; this really says something about the quality of the PS program — and its students — than anything else.

Anyway, let’s all pity what’s happening to Ms. Wallace; that is what this article seems to convey.

But in all seriousness, for God’s sake people, stop harassing her!

She gets to reschedule her final after posting that offensive video? Can I also reschedule my final after loosing so much study time being offended at her video?

Honestly, her comments on the “tsunami thing“and “china chong” imitation is really, really hurtful. I really don’t think she understands the amount of hurt she inflicted on the Asian community and UCLA in general.

This absolutely deplorable nitwit obviously lost her mind as the stress of finals threw out a Mortal Combat “finish her” blow on her tiny brain.

How did this subhuman even get to her third year? Perhaps she paid some of us “annoying Asians” to do her homework. So much for PoliSci and a future in that field. Time to change majors, Alexandra! How about Asian American Studies? Asian Humanities? Linguistics, Asian Languages, and Cultures? What a hoot. Do I smell a transfer?

Bodily damage or life threat seems very unnecessary. But rescheduling for finals? are you kidding me? She is 21 years old, a grown-up women. She needs to take responsibility of her own words and publications of any form. No final should be rescheduled due to personal mistake like this especially, hey, the class she is trying to reschedule finals for is “political science” where every the public speech counts. She demonstrated that she is not competent of controlling her anger, usage of inappropriate language in from of popular media, poor message framing, and very inappropriate choice of words, which one is not a core expectation for a poli-sci major student? I do not think she deserve any final reschedules.

I don’t see how this rant of her’s is such a big issue. She did state a fact—in my opinion. Most people that chat on their cell phones in the library are Asians. Heck, I do it too because I get annoyed by my fellow Asians chatting on the phone, so I do it to annoy them back without success and in the end annoy everyone else. Seriously, FOBs (fresh off the boat Asians) give Asian-Americans a bad image. Too bad it took a White girl with guts to rant about it. I’d do it too but then no one would take it seriously because an Asian ranting about Asians just doesn’t cut like a White person ranting about a minority.

Hey, at least her point is made. When I was at UCLA just a few years back, it annoyed me when people were chatting on their cellphones too. Even a tiny whisper, “Hey can I call you back?” or those loud ringing ones can get annoying. I don’t think she meant to be racist. Give her some slack, she’s still learning. She does give UCLA a bad name though.

First of all, “her apology” was said through the chancellor’s voice.. we need to hear it from her personally.. just because we have read it in this article doesn’t mean anything at all. She apologizes to the UCLA campus. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER MILLIONS OF ASIANS THAT SHE OFFENDED?? She clearly has no brain by making the video in the first place, then she doesn’t even know how to make a proper apology/statement. I still question how she made it into UCLA in the first place.
If she can “voice her opinion” then SO CAN WE.
Yes she is ignorant, yes she was being racist, and yes she was definitely out of line with her stupid “Ching chong” remarks and ESPECIALLY the Tsunami comment. She has no idea how her stupidity has effected Asian’s all over the world. I do agree that the hate and death threats were unnecessary and wrong, but she seriously needs to be taught a lesson. Just because you belittled us does NOT mean we will let you walk all over us. This is 2011, times have changed honey! We stand up for what we believe in.. and we ALL believe you should suffer the consequences for being such a moron!

Whether the comment was mildly offensive or disgusting, it is intolerable that a student, whose educational background stems from UCLA, has the moral compass to point towards accepting those types of beliefs.

If she openly stated her status as a UCLA student, those who watch the video will judge other UCLA students as just that: racists. Those judgements deteriorate the reputation UCLA has built over the years as a reputable school. How she can attend that school is deplorable. Education is a privilege. If she is a junior at an esteemed school, she should know by now what is socially wrong or right.

As a recent alumnus, this story really is embarrassing. I’m watching the local news, and her story is on every channel. UCLA’s long history and great reputation is negatively affected by Ms. Wallace’s remarks. This also includes the reputations of the Asian community worldwide, her parents, friends, classmates, professors, alumni, UCs, Americans, blondes, females and herself. I feel mostly sorry for Chancellor Block, whom took responsibility. I do not wish to see Ms. Wallace’s academic future end prematurely, but UCLA must protect its reputation by setting an example.

This is HILARIOUS. With a bit of luck, she does enough damage to our school’s image that fees and tuition are forced down.

Addressing your comments about how her level of intelligence could allow her to reach her junior year at UCLA: If Michelle Bachmann could graduate law school, and George Bush could finish at Yale, then I’m sure the U.S. educational system could sustain this person.

Did she make stupid and airheaded mistakes made on a digitally global scale? Sure. Should that condemn her to expulsion or death threats? Hardly. Please back off, people. There are much worse people out there than this harmless nimrod.

What a disturbing statement by Chancellor Naples. I attended UC and now live in Asia. In much of this continent, free speech is unprotected and considered etremely pernacious. This is one of the great distinctions between our free society in America and places like China and Singapore where such basic freedoms are absent. To equate death threats with distasteful or unpopular speech is something one would expect to hear in communist China, but which I am very disheartened to hear from American faculty. The first amendment is not intended to protect the status quo but rather that which may be considered undesirable content by the majority. What a childish and disappointing overeaction by the university community.

Obviously she wasn’t thinking when she posted this video. The only part that truly bothers me is the comment about poor Japan and the very recent tsunami. The people she reference to about calling their “whole address book” have bigger problems to handle that are way worse then having a little noise in the library. Have some compassion! Even with all the backlash she is now getting she should still count her blessings. Every group of people (Men, Women, Kids, Adults, Americans, South Americans, Europeans, Asians, Africans… You get the idea) have their share of idiots. This is just another bad example of the human race (That goes for the people sending death threats as well). Just putting in my two cents and now I’m going to move on with my life.

1. The girl is entitled to freedom of speech. As stupid as she may and how racist her comments are, I believe we are in America and the first amendment of our Bill of Rights enables her to express herself.

2. Death threats? What in the world makes that okay? Threatening one’s life is just as sad and pathetic as racism.

3. Sorry that racism has shaken the UCLA campus, but welcome to the world. It’s an unfortunate truth.

Let’s all step back and think about how outrageously out of proportion this thing has been taken.Yes, unfortunate, but the outlandishly reactions are just as sad.

Move on people. If the girl “doesn’t like Asians” than that’s her problem and her prerogative. Not sure when when everyone had to like each other was some sort of rule in this world.

Freedom of Speech…. Yes, she has that right, but when she brings in an institution (UCLA) then it does not necessary give her that freedom of speech since she’s representing a student of UCLA.

Ms. Wallace is not a child. And she didn’t make a mistake. She had to say what she always wanted to say. It seems she’s always been extremely annoyed by these hordes of Asians. In other words she doesn’t like these many Asians attending an American university named UCLA. In her book Asians can’t be Americans That’s called “Racism”. She doesn’t belong here. She should go somewhere else for her college education.

Someone walked past me today and said, “Ching chong.” I responded with a blank stare. Then the person laughed and said he was asking me a question. I want to leave my former dream university to go somewhere else.. Please make the racism stop it hurts..

I believe this whole situation has been extremely blown out of proportion. Everyone makes mistakes. I’m sure you and I, both, have said some things in our lifetime that have been considered racist, offensive, and hurtful. The reaction to this video has gotten so out of hand. People are calling for her expulsion. For what? For saying something stupid? Did she call for the death of a certain race? No. Did she call for violence towards a specific ethnic group? Absolutely not. Did she say something stupid and offensive and post it on youtube? Yes. We have all said something hurtful and offensive at one point in our lives. What sets us apart from her is that we weren’t asinine enough to post a video of our remarks online.
As a UCLA alum I am deeply ashamed by the students’ responses to this situation. People have been responding with death threats, crude insults, and hostility. Students have been reposting the video even after the original video had been removed and have been posting up Alexandra Wallace’s personal information on public forums, making her even more vulnerable to hateful messages and threats. Students have essentially become bullies and advocates of hate, the exact thing they condemn, and have forgotten their morals. They have forgotten how to act with civility. Rather than seeing this as a need to educate someone on the issue of diversity and tolerance, students have turned into an angry mob, having lost any sense of rationality. In my eyes, those that have reacted with hostility and hate have stooped lower than Alexandra Wallace herself. Alexandra has apologized. We should forgive her, yet people are still shouting for her head. Remember, Gandhi had once said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” Alexandra Wallace has faced the consequences of her actions. UCLA, be the bigger person. Forgive and forget not how to love.
