The Daily Bruin asked students whether students should live on campus or commute in order to cut costs? Here’s what they had to say:

Benjamin Gelbart
Second-year, physiological sciences
“During the year I lived on campus but I have commuted during the summer. I think it’s better to be on campus because everyone is here.”

Matt Rosenberg
Fourth-year, cognitive science
“I don’t really think students are missing out by not living on campus; people don’t really hang out on campus.”

Mildred Lima
Fourth-year, English
“I have done both and it is cheaper to commute, but with the amount of time it takes to get to campus with traffic (it) is definitely not worth it.”

Sasha Arya
Fourth-year, psychobiology
“I think it’s best to live in the apartments because you are still close to campus, but you have way more freedoms to do what you want unlike (in) the dorms.”

I would rather live at home in the Inland Empire. I love UCLA but I love my family and the clean air as well. Its worth enough to take an hour drive everyday. The traffic is horrendous but if you drive at non-peak hours it is a breeze and a good drive. It helps clear my mind.

Ironically Norman, if all you spent on gas were spent on a shared apartment, you could live in Westwood. This does not even include wear and tear on your car, insurance, and your medical care for accidents you are involved in.
