The No. 1 UCLA women’s golf team was undoubtedly short-staffed at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

The Bruins were without three-time All-American senior Stephanie Kono as she played as an individual competitor, finishing second overall.

But UCLA didn’t seem to be affected as it captured the tournament’s title, the team’s second of the year in just as many competitions.

After the first round of tournament play, the Bruins found themselves tied for first place after shooting 277, seven under par. They were tied with the Washington Huskies after the first 18 holes.

All five players representing UCLA, junior Lee Lopez, sophomore Ani Gulugian, freshman Erynne Lee, junior Tiffany Lua and freshman Kyle Roig, scored under par with Lopez, Lee and Gulugian all shooting two under par, placing them at ninth place at that point of the tournament.

UCLA continued its strong play into the second round as they recorded a 279, good for five under par. The performance gave UCLA a four-shot lead over the rest of the competition going into the tournament’s final day.

Vanderbilt matched UCLA’s prowess on the second day and moved into second place after shooting a 279 as well.

Lopez was the Bruins’ top performer that day with a score 68, placing her at fifth place out of the entire field.

On the third day of the Stanford Intercollegiate, UCLA stayed cool under pressure from other teams and retained its lead.

The Bruins’ score of two over on the final day was good enough to ensure a three-stroke victory over the second-place Commodores.

Kono had a tournament to remember after shooting all three rounds under 70 finishing 11 under par with a score of 202, a collegiate best for her.

Lopez led the Bruin team with a score of 208, tying her for sixth place out of the entire playing field.
