All season long the UCLA women’s volleyball team has remained unbeaten at home.
The Bruins (23-4, 16-3 Pac-12) are ranked second in the nation again, just as they had been when they traveled to Arizona.
But this time, they plan to avenge their loss against the Wildcats, and they have no intentions of losing at home for the first time this season.
“Arizona played a really good game when we played them last time, but it was more about the things we didn’t do back then that didn’t allow us to finish the game off the way we planned,” junior outside hitter Bojana Todorovic said.
“We’ve matured since then, so it’s not specifically Arizona that’s going to rattle us or something.”
The match against Arizona (17-10, 9-9) will be followed by a match against Arizona State (8-19, 4-14) on Sunday.
The Bruins had no problems with the Sun Devils last time they faced each other, beating them in three sets.
This late into the season, the team needs to keep its focus on continuing its winning ways into the postseason.
“This is definitely the challenging time of the year,” coach Mike Sealy said. “We’re getting ready for the tournament and trying to finish the Pac-12 season strong.”
In order to polish up its performance, the team has been going back to the basics.
“We’ve been pretty good technically all year, but we got a bit loose up in Oregon,” Sealy said. “We just rededicated ourselves to some basics.”
Senior setter Lauren Van Orden has been putting up solid numbers all season, but she realizes that her team may have a weakness.
“We have to work a bit on our consistency,” Van Orden said. “We just have to prepare for each game the same way.”
There may be some truth behind those words because this UCLA women’s volleyball team swept two powerhouses, Stanford and Cal but lost to unranked teams such as Arizona.
The Bruins have not made the same mistakes twice yet, perhaps because they watch the games over and figure out what they did wrong.
“There’s going to be ups and downs,” Todorovic said. “But I think with the few losses we had, we definitely learned a lot from every one of them. I think we can use those experiences to our advantage.”
The Bruins can win the Pac-12 if they win the rest of their games this season. Three teams stand in the way of that goal – Arizona, Arizona State and USC.
The team just has to make sure it takes on its challengers seriously and comes out victorious.
