Correction: The original version of this article contained an error. Glen Parrish never attended Arizona State University.

An 18-year-old man was found dead in the Theta Chi fraternity house on Saturday afternoon. He was not a UCLA student.

Friends found Manhattan Beach resident Glen Parrish in bed at the fraternity house, located at 663 Gayley Ave., said Los Angeles County coroner’s investigator Kitty McCracken. Parrish was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m.

An overdose may be the cause of death, but it is still under investigation, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Richard Brunson. Police believe alcohol and possibly prescription drugs were involved, but toxicology reports are pending, Brunson said.

Parrish’s death was not a homicide, he added.

Police believe Parrish may have consumed the drugs and alcohol before coming to the fraternity house, though this is not yet confirmed, Brunson said.

Parrish was visiting a member of Theta Chi, said Interfraternity Council President Matt Baskharoon, a fifth-year history and environmental studies/geography student.

The fraternity followed Greek life crisis management procedures properly and as of now will not face any consequences from IFC, Baskharoon said.

UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services counselors are available for people who were at the fraternity, said university spokesman Phil Hampton.

Officials from the UCLA Office of Student Affairs were also at the fraternity house on Saturday to cooperate with the LAPD investigation and lend support to the fraternity, Hampton said.

“Our sympathies and thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man who died,” Hampton said.

Members of the national Theta Chi organization and the UCLA chapter could not be reached for comment.

Isn’t this the same fraternity that just a few years ago left a brother dead in the sunset canyon pool?

This is a terrible tragedy that unfortunately plays out on college campuses every year. The epidemic of alcohol abuse and drug use on college campuses is deeply disturbing and there are no easy solutions. Continued alcohol and drug education within the greek system and throughout the college system might help. So very sorry that UCLA is on the map for becoming yet another sad statistic. As the mother of a fourth year student in the greek system, I worry about the excessive abuse of alcohol on college campuses on a regular basis. UCLA is not unique in this problem. My thoughts and prayers to those involved and affected by this terrible tragedy.

Joe to your comment, A brother from Theta Chi did pass away in 2008 from a swimming accident. He and a couple of his friends, not associated with Theta Chi, had snuck into sunset recreational center after hours and decided to swim in the pool while the tarp was still covering the pool. The brother had been a skilled swimmer and was confident in his ability to make it under the tarp to the untarped area. From my understanding, when he attempted this, he swam into the wall of the pool head first which knocked him unconscious and led to his drowning. This was a great loss to the house and university, he was a very intelligent and socially active student, scoring in the 98th percentile on the MCATs and was schedule to attend John Hopkin Medical School after graduation that year.

@ Leah
First of all the student was not affiliated with UCLA whatsoever and therefore the only sad statistic here belongs to ASU.

Second this instance of (apparently Xanax) drug abuse can be attributed to poor parenting of this ASU student and should not reflect solely on the UCLA student body.

As a fourth year in the greek system here at UCLA I can assure you that doing drugs and getting wasted is not our primary objective. Unfortunately all it takes is one careless and unsupervised 18 year old freshmen from a safety school to mess everything up.

Regardless of the “facts” and “statistics” this is a very tragic isolated incident.
My condolences to the family and friends.

You do not know the student or his family and so should not comment on their situation. We all know that abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs remains a big problem in and out of colleges and I hope there is some way that something good can come from this tragic loss.

@ Al

As the correction notes: “Glen Parrish never attended Arizona State University.” Leah has a valid point, this is no time to point fingers.

You can’t mix prescription drugs with alcohol! It’s that simple! I have been prescribed hydrocodone for the past few years due to severe arthritis in my knee and anytime I’m going to drink, I don’t take my meds. It’s like mixing cocaine and heroin, you will die. Too many kids think it will give them a good buzz, but it’s not worth the risk. Even if it doesn’t kill you it will mess up your liver!

Glenn Parish was NOT an ASU student. He was a high school student living in MB.

It’s time UCLA does fraternity house checks. If these frats want to be associated with UCLA then UCLA police or other needs to check the frats. I don’t care if anyone in the frat house is twenty-one, it’s time for zero tolerance regarding drugs and alcohol. If the frat is caught with drugs or alcohol then they can no longer be associated with UCLA PERIOD! If they don’t want to abide by the rule, they will cease to exist as a UCLA fraternity. It’s that simple.

I personally do not understand how Theta Chi will not receive any reprimand. I found it incredibily (unfairly) biased for the presumption to be that this kid got doped and wasted BEFORE entering the frat house…..how gullible are we, really? I am a UCLA alum. Spent most of my undergrad years in Westwood. Everyone knows what goes down on frat row. Oh, and no one is checking IDs. Where is the accountability? If this kid arrived underage and wasted, why was there no 911 call placed on the spot to have him taken away and treated? I’m deeply sorrowed about the loss of such a young life, and I do believe the fraternity should be blackballed, suspended, fined, sued, lose their house, and any rights and privileges afforded to them as a registered campus organization and IFC member.

What do we expect from fraternities? They don’t add to education, they don’t add to experience, and they don’t watch your back. College is for education, not necessarily vocational, but at least, you should learn not to act like the idiots you often see in frats. The college experience is not only about drinking and partying, but this is what these frats impose on their victims. Finally, frats always have a hazing ritual, it bonds groups because you survive a terrible experience together; if you really think about it though, can you trust anyone who has to torture you before they can be close with you? If yes, then you better sign up as a masochist on some online dating services…
