Police are investigating the report of an assault with a baseball bat on Saturday morning near Veteran and Weyburn avenues.

A 29-year-old man was leaving a party around 1 to 1:30 a.m. on Saturday when he was approached by a group of four men near Veteran and Weyburn avenues.

“Words were exchanged” between the men, and the group began beating the man, said Chris Ragsdale, senior lead officer at the West Los Angeles Police Department.

One man in the group was carrying a silver aluminum baseball bat, which he used to beat the 29-year-old, Ragsdale said. It is not certain whether anybody involved was a UCLA student, he said.

The 29-year-old transported himself to Northridge hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He reported the incident to LAPD at around 9:40 a.m., Ragsdale said.

All four men in the group are described as Hispanic and in their early- to mid-20s. The man who used a baseball bat is described as 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches, Ragsdale said.

Ragsdale said the group may be connected to a woman the man talked to at the party, and therefore he could have been targeted, but it is still not certain.

Police recommend students walk with people at night, especially during the early morning, which are peak hours for these types of incidents.

If a student is approached, Ragsdale said the student should cooperate, hand over any property and gather as much information as possible. Students should also call the police immediately after an incident to increase the odds of apprehending suspects in the area.

Anyone with information about the assault should call the West LAPD at 310-444-1580.
