Despite having scored only four goals in their last six games, the UCLA women’s soccer team could not stop hitting the back of the net on Friday. The Bruins’ offense exploded for six goals in a 6-1 victory over Arizona at Drake Stadium.
Senior forward Sydney Leroux notched her third career hat trick within the first 25 minutes of the game as UCLA scored four goals during that time.
Junior midfielder Zakiya Bywaters started the Bruin attack in the 8th minute, scoring off the rebound from her own shot.
Leroux found of the back of the net two minutes later, receiving the ball from sophomore midfielder Jenna Richmond on the left side and then sending the ball far post for the goal.
Richmond tallied two assists for UCLA and freshman midfielder Sam Mewis had three. The two lead the team in assists with five apiece.
After holding a 4-1 lead for the majority of the game, the Bruins finished on a strong note, netting two goals in the final ten minutes. Freshmen Ally Courtnall, who did not play against Washington State last Friday because of a quad injury, and Kylie McCarthy each scored one.
Six goals is UCLA highest single game total this year.
The Bruins outshot Arizona 24-2 on the evening and earned their first win since Oregon State on Oct. 2. UCLA plays Arizona State on Sunday at 1 pm at Drake Stadium.
