It was a heartbreaking ending to an exceptional season.
Tied 1-1 after double overtime, the UCLA women’s soccer team was upset by San Diego on penalty kicks Friday to dash the Bruins’ NCAA tournament hopes.
The Toreros converted three of five PKs to earn the win after UCLA failed to close out the victory, missing their last two penalty shots.
The Bruins trailed 1-0 for the most of the game after San Diego scored in the 2nd minute.
UCLA was unable to score for the majority of the game, despite creating several promising opportunities that barely missed the goal.
With ten minutes remaining in regulation play, the Bruins finally sent the ball into the back of the net off the foot of sophomore midfielder Jenna Richmond.
Richmond received an end line pass on the right side from freshman defender Abby Dahlkemper and one-timed it toward the left side of the goal. The ball hit off the inside part of the left post and slipped into the net.
In both ten minute overtime periods, UCLA dominated possession, keeping the ball mostly on the Toreros’ half of the field. The Bruins tallied four shots in the golden goal period while San Diego did not shoot once during the overtime period.
The loss is the earliest that the Bruins have exited the NCAA tournament since 1998.
On a completely opposite note, this season marks the second time in school history that UCLA has gone through a season with only one loss. The only other time was in 2008.
