Playing on a Drake Stadium field made slick with rain, the No. 2 UCLA women’s soccer team outscored an aggressive USC team 5-2 on Friday evening.
The Bruins came into the match confident, scoring three goals in the first half, all by different players.
Senior forward Sydney Leroux started the scoring in the 20th minute, receiving a pass on the left side from freshman midfielder Caprice Dydasco, and nailing the ball into the far post of the net from a difficult angle.
Freshman midfielder Sam Mewis followed with a goal off a long range shot in the 29th minute, and freshman midfielder Ally Courtnall found the back of the net in the 33rd minute off a perfectly placed pass from junior Zakiya Bywaters.
Both Leroux and Mewis scored again in the second half. The Lady Trojans netted both of their goals in the second part of the match.
Although USC scored two goals Friday evening, the most against UCLA at home this season, the Lady Trojans seemed outmatched by the organized play of the Bruins throughout the game.
UCLA took 26 shots compared to USC’s nine.
The win marks the end of the regular season for UCLA who finishes with a 15-1-3 overall record.
Friday’s match was also Senior Night, honoring the five seniors on this year’s team: Leroux, goalkeeper Chante Sandiford, midfielder Charney Burk, defender Amelia Mathis and defender Summer Williams.
All of the seniors except the injured Sandiford played in Friday’s match, which was attended by a record setting 3,826 fans.
