Redshirt junior quarterback Kevin Prince scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Taylor Embree in the first half.

SAN FRANCISCO — In an ugly first half that saw UCLA’s punt total match the number of first downs it gained, the Bruins head into the locker room leading Illinois 7-3 at the half.

Neither team could get anything going offensively as UCLA and Illinois combined for just 183 yards of total offense.

UCLA was bailed out of a 3rd-and-16 situation on its only scoring drive of the half when Illinois’ Akeem Spence committed a personal foul that kept the drive alive. A 19-yard run from redshirt junior running back Johnathan Franklin set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from redshirt junior quarterback Kevin Prince to senior wide receiver Taylor Embree.

Illinois’ only points of the half came courtesy of a UCLA turnover. Prince fumbled a snap from redshirt senior center Kai Maiava that led to a short field for the Illini.

Illinois drove to the UCLA 3-yardline but redshirt senior linebacker Glenn Love and redshirt junior defensive end Datone Jones sacked Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase for a loss of 15 yards. Derek Dimke booted home a 36-yard field goal to pull the Illini within four points as time expired.
