Alexandra Wallace announced she will no longer be attending UCLA in an apology letter released to the Daily Bruin on Friday.

Wallace, the creator of the “Asians in the Library” video that went viral last Sunday, released a statement through a spokesman for the Wallace family.

The letter comes the day UCLA announced that it will not take action against Wallace for the video.

Below is Wallace’s full letter:

In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.

I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.

So that’s what humors mean to her. She is insensitive toward the Tsunami in Japan and she lacks empathy. As a polisci major student Ms. Wallace is, I don’t think it is right to make jokes about another race.

Absolutely ridiculous. She said something incredibly stupid so she and her family get death threats? Is that how we handle ignorance now as a society? Instead of hoping for enlightenment and change we merely frighten people into dark shadows? Nice going to those of you who responded with fear and hate, you certainly showed the true meaning of tolerance here.

Yes Michael that is what happens when somebody says something so incredibly stupid, racist and insensitive as she said. If the world knew how to react to her ignorance with grace and tolerance like you would like to see, the world would be a perfect place with no hate in it at all. Oh but wait… Alexandra, a member of this society, has just demonstrated that same hate and lack of tolerance that you would like the rest of the world to show her. Yeah good luck with that one… Does her family deserve the death threats? Of course not. But she was the one who put her family in danger when she displayed her hate in a hateful world. That silly silly girl…

“The entire Asian culture?” Wow, I guess she, or at least her spokesman, has a bit more to learn.

Anyway, I am saddened to hear that she will leave UCLA. People make mistakes, and Alexandra, if it is any consulation, though I do not agree with you and think you have a something more to learn about “The entire Asian Culture.” I do not think you should leave UCLA. I realize there will be a lot of people who will never let you live this down, and IMO, those people are using you to make a larger point, and a point that I do not support.

Tolerance means just that: tolerance.

Pretty sure that walking down the streets of compton in a KKK outfit will get you shot. That’s overreaction too on the person who shot youu.from

But seriously, this was so stupid that peacefullyanybody not surprised or outraged that the response was so extreme is npretty naive

She does have the right of speech. What the school doesn’t know is that this girl was about to start a blog domain of her own on the idea of “Asian in the Library” before the vBlog on YouTube went viral on the internet. She then dropped the idea. It doesn’t change a thing that she decided not to attend UCLA. Well perhaps it would be the best choice for her, but that doesn’t change her prejudice mind. In the letter she wrote her idea of racism; “should be a humorous video”. She seriously needs to learn how to treat others the way you want to be treated and how to accept others as who they are. This girl has some serious issues. I’m surprised she is a polisci major student at UCLA.

Running away from your problem.. then act like it never happened…

Good luck and hope you don’t run into Asians any time soon.

I don’t know what the big deal was. Yes she did mock the asian language, but how many other languages are not botched in an attempt to imitate them? That is the only offensive piece i found in the video. She simply vented her frustrations and let her opinions be known, albeit not in the smartest way. I find it very disturbing that in a country as generous and accepting as ours ( visible by the diverse culture in our campus) she would be lynch mobbed and destroyed as she was. The persecution itself was more evil than her video ever could be. Maybe it’s the repressed and censored Asian culture that prevents them from accepting our heavily fought for freedom of speech.

Gets you wonder about her upbringing and her family. She comes across as this stuck up blonde college girl going to UCLA on daddy’s money. She obviously comes from a racist family… the “Asian culture”.. Hopefully, wherever university she winds up at next, this bad stigma will follow. But then again, she could have a future flipping Yumburgers at Jollibee.

Sorry honey, but I think it is more than just the Asian community that was ostracizing you. This time you got your quantification wrong again. When will you learn?

Re: Candace V. She has the constitutional right to express herself no matter what…that I understand and will not discourage. What I don’t understand is why in the world would an UCLA student vent off her frustration at an entire community through generalizations and stereotypes. Had she quantify ‘some’ Asian students yapping blah blah blah (less the mocking) over the god d@mn stupid phone….then I don’t think she would be in the hot water. One needs to be aware that free speech comes with a responsibility and repercussion (as someone stated). For this, I am not surprised at the sort of response she received.

As an Asian American, I was just as offended and angered by her ridiculous video. She has apologized and is withdrawing from the university. I think we should all accept her apology and move on. I’m sure she is going through hell right now and will continue to suffer the consequences well into the future. Let’s act w/ some compassion and let the girl move forward w/ her life.

Now onto another issue …. we better beat Florida!!! Third time is a charm … hopefully.

(Just in case you’re curious, I’m an asian)

I’m not sure if she deserves what she says she’s been receiving. As much as it was insensitive and tasteless, I don’t think she should have received death threats. Yes she should be laughed at, learn her lessons and we move on.

While the entire internet was busy mob lynching her the whole week, I have surprisingly not heard much uproar about the reprehensible and damaging comments the rapper 50cents made on his twitter account (and he never really made any apology). Was mocking asian accents really worse than talking about evacuating his “hos” from the beach?

Hmmm, rather than quit UCLA and run away, why doesn’t she stay and try to engage in dialogue, immerse herself into learning more about Asian cultures (note we have many, not just a few)? She’s taking the easiest path, and we’ll never know if she truly learned or changed from this ignorant brain freeze.

Yes, Alexandra’s post should inspire outrage and contempt, but that’s not excuse for bullying behavior in return. I second Michael’s post. And yes to Nicole, if people behaved like Michael suggested the world would be, at least, far better, and it’s not very realistic. Of course there’s that saying “be the change you seek” because the world is malleable to large degrees- perhaps reality is what we’ve made it. For centuries, at least, we’ve excused our own ugliness by saying “everybody else is ugly and it’s unrealistic that it will change.” Change what you can change.

Back to Alexandra though- in responding to a wrong there’s a concept called ‘proportionality’. Justice has already been served. Alexandra humiliated herself, and she has been nationally and even internationally shamed. She has been driven from UCLA, wrongly or rightly- but I don’t think many of us feel sorry for her either way. Ridiculing her on message boards is one thing, but there’s no excuse, at this point, for escalating that to make it more personal, and it’s no one’s right to do so. Bullying is what Alexandra was doing. It’s a rape-esque behavior. It’s disgusting.

It’s also hypocritical. If you’re so filled (using ‘you’ in general here) with moral outrage over this, where have you been up until now? The d-bags at Stormfront (.org) have a powerful web presence and say far worst things about Asians than Alexandra would have ever said, even if she had started a blog focused solely on Asians in the Library. Their blog is: “White Nationalist News and Discussion for Racial Realists.” Doesn’t that make your blood boil? They’re far far more of a threat, they’re far more strong, and they’re much more anger inspiring than Alexandra. If you haven’t been seeking these things out to be hostile toward because you’re afraid of them, and you’re attacking Alexandra because you’re not afraid of her… well, that would make you pretty pathetic, wouldn’t it? Be brave. Be constructive.

Well Candance, other than mocking another language, there are other several underlying factors that showed us the things she said were definitely no jokes. Throughout the video she said “those horde of Asian get accepted in OUR school… But if you’re going to come to UCLA then use American manners”. It is a UNITED State, we UNITED all kinds of people here. I’m sure a lot of those Asian students on campus are American citizens. She could’ve just made that same exact point about the library noise level without generalizing “Asian” and putting in “American manners”. “So being the polite, nice AMERICAN girl that my momma raised me to be”. What is she implying? She is drawing a line between the white and colors.

I’m sure that she made a deal with that school, that if she “decided” to leave, they wouldn’t take action.
I’m not sure if the school has the right to because it’s a first Amendment issue, but if it was on campus, they might. It also affects the appearance of the school. Personally, I don’t see any other option for her other than leaving because people will always know who she is and what she did. Next time, when you’re angry, don’t post the damn video. In NO WAY was that funny. Not a bit.

This is all sad. Alexandra Wallace is the scapegoat in all of this. Yes, her video was insensitive and offensively racist. But her video didn’t warrant this mob reaction. She represents our fear that the rest of America still sees us Asian-Americans as “the other.” And we hate her for representing that. It’s scary that Asian-Americans are STILL SEEN as foreign, different, and Un-American. But it’s the truth. We are still seen this way in mainstream America. But people can’t blame Alexandra Wallace for that. Instead of stupid death threats, make videos that enlighten, enter mainstream media and humanize ourselves!! We can’t be afraid to poke fun at this and enter into a dialogue about this. We need to learn and grow and dig deep into what being American means. And not necessarily “teach Alexandra Wallace a lesson or two.” We ALL need to learn, and continue digging. There’s a lot of history here. For all minority groups. I, personally, am thankful for the video that Alexandra Wallace posted. It was honest and – though hurtful – was not hateful. Her video sparked an intense dialogue and I am grateful for the heightened awareness this has caused. (This stuff has been swept under the rug for too long.)

I for one wish that she would not quit.. Everyone makes mistakes, HUGE mistakes. She can turn this around and set an example of humility, forgiveness and tolerance. I wish that the UCLA staff would support her in staying and encourage those characteristics in it’s student body. Believe me kids, you will make TREMENDOUS mistakes in your life. Running away means you only makes the same mistake again. Got to go through it.
If you’re reading this Alexandra, I hope you’ll reconsider. And believe it or not, this too shall pass.

*The United States. Typo. I was in a hurry. I’m in total agreement with Jully. The other day I was trying to get someone to see that same point as well. Though I find it annoying but I’m not offended nor do I hate her, I’m just upset that there are still people who wear color lens. I once thought racism was the thing of the past. The vBlog Alexandra made got me to realize that racism still exists and it will always be. It is just hidden deep within them. She is not the scapegoat, she is just one of the many.

History time! Remember Columbus’ journey? This land actually belongs to the indigenous people, not Alexandra Wallace.

Re: August Tenbrook: I’m from Ms. Wallace’s hometown in Sacramento. I was literally shocked to the core because Ms. Wallace lived in one of the nation’s most diverse region, yet think like a bigot. I think it was the shock value that Ms. Wallace brought that outraged me. I know there are far worse things said about any race, but the point that disturbs me was…all this time at UCLA and that is all she got out of her education? I would expect better of UCLA students (I’m not one), after all UCLA is one of the nation’s most prestigious universities. Shouldn’t its students be a bit more cultured, critically intelligent, and at least have common sense as compared to the rest of us ‘average’ Joes and Janes who would likely troll racism all over every posts on people who disagree or doesn’t look like us.

I do hope Ms. Wallace continue her studies because she really needs it.

This is not the first time that an insensitive comment, etc. has been directed at the Asian community. The community is stereotypically known to be quiet, tolerant (if not overly tolerant), and less likely to protest on a large scale. Hence, over time, the community has been viewed as an easy target. In fact, it is this “passive” view that others have of the Asian community that makes someone like Alexandra Wallace believe that she could even come out with such a video and not expect a large-scale negative response. I’m sure if she had a view of the African-American community being “loud,” etc., she would not have dared to place such a video in public. I’m also sure that if her racist comments had been directed at the African American instead, the UCLA management would have had to deal with an even more harsh political environment. The Chancellor could have been asked to step down had he not dealt with it to the satisfaction of the demanding public. People have always had the right to free speech. The other side of that coin is that others responding to that free speech can also respond harshly under free speech. Even if Constitutionally protected, the political environment could still force people out of their positions independent of legal rights. Once again, had this been a negative comment against the African American community, UCLA management would not have gotten out so easily. Alexandra (although I support your right to free speech) you chose to ruin your career and future with it because of your stupidity. As far as the Asian community responding, it’s about time that a community stood up against negative public comments against them. This response is also supported by many in the non-Asian communities. This is year 2011 – for God sake, you would think a UCLA student would have more prudence. It’s a hard lesson learned (or to learn). I also do not support any violent reaction or the threat of one in response to stupidity. That would be a crime. However, another lesson to anyone inclined to place their face on the internet with such comments in the future, you must realize that you can’t control who will respond to you. That in itself could be dangerous. Think, learn, appreciate from others, and most importantly, learn from your mistake – even if you can’t correct
