The Daily Bruin was named the best college news website and the second best newspaper in the region by the Society of Professional Journalists. A Bruin investigation also was the national winner for in-depth reporting.

At Saturday’s SPJ awards banquet, The Bruin earned awards in 16 categories in Region 11, which includes schools in California, Arizona, Nevada, Guam, Hawaii and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Tuesday, SPJ named Over and Back, an investigation of the recruitment of basketball players from Cameroon led by staffers Matt Stevens and Maya Sugarman, the national winner for in-depth reporting. Its online component, dailybruin.com/overandback, was one of two national finalists for online in-depth reporting.

Work from Over and Back, a project that involved more than a dozen staffers, with assistance from the Bridget O’Brien Foundation, won regional first place awards for online in-depth reporting, print in-depth reporting and feature photography. This is The Bruin’s first national winner since being named Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper in 2006.
