UCLA has announced plans to build a seven-story conference and guest center on the site currently occupied by Parking Structure 6, using funds from the $100 million donation in February by alumni Meyer and Renee Luskin.
The new design comes in response to backlash to initial plans for the donation. Administrators had planned to build a residential conference center and faculty club on the site of the current UCLA Faculty Center.
But faculty members and Westwood neighbors came out in staunch opposition to the project, launching a “Save the Faculty Center” campaign.
Administrators then shifted the site to a lot at the end Westwood Plaza, next to Spaulding Field. A total of 125 underground parking spaces will be available, according to a statement from the university.
[UPDATED at 1:04 p.m.: The new site is more centrally located and will minimize impact on surrounding neighborhoods, said Chancellor Gene Block.
While the move to Parking Lot 6 addressed concerns about the faculty center, some community members said they were worried about the increased noise and traffic the construction would bring when the original plan was announced.
Block said that while he will listen to these concerns, he ultimately believes the new facility will have a primarily positive impact on the UCLA community.
“We understand how critical it is to maintain good relations with our neighbors and represent the wishes of faculty, and this new location seems to have won the support of both groups,” Block said.]
The new center is slated to cost a total of $152 million, $8 million less than what was initially proposed.
No student tuition or state funds will be funneled into the project, according to the statement. Construction will be paid partially by the Luskin donation and partially from revenue generated from the operation of the building.
The project is pending approval by the UC Board of Regents. A meeting to discuss the scope of an environmental impact report will take place Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Faculty Center’s California Room.
