Theatre Review: Bring It On

In the 11 years since the original “Bring It On” (starring Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and Gabrielle Union) came out, studios have milked the peppy cash cow for all its worth.

Global Grub: Empanada's Place offers patrons a wide variety of the Argentine delicacy

It’s easy to overlook the 26-year-old Empanada’s Place if you’re just driving by. Located at 3811 Sawtelle Blvd., right around the corner from a liquor store and blocks of residential housing, its store front is about as long as a dorm room.

Shelf lives

The dining table of Dahlia Gratia Setiyawan, a history doctoral candidate, is covered with large photography books open to pages of unsmiling mug shots and homicide crime scenes.

Global Grub: Columnist ventures to a British pub that falls short in authenticity

When you walk into an English pub, Sunday Night Football probably shouldn’t be playing on the flat screens.

Global Grub: Flavors of Belize offers treats that pack heat

Located at 1271 S. La Brea Ave., Flavors of Belize is run by a short, vibrant woman named Diamine Pariente who chats with guests and says things like “You girls look 16.”

Bus Stops: Bruins for Transit co-president Matthew Kroneberger talks about downtown Los Angeles

I covered a lot of ground this week in my column, but I think I was most impressed with the architecture of downtown Los Angeles. At one point, we made our way down to the building that hosts the Grand Central Market. From the roof you can see a lot of Los Angeles: the Los Angeles Public Library, the Los Angeles Times office, the Federal Building and several gleaming high-rises.

Here, Bruins for Transit co-president Matthew Kroneberger talks about Bunker Hill from the roof of the Grand Central Market, overlooking Angels Flight.

Bus Stops: Dining options at the Getty Center

Medium Coffee – $2.25 tax
Cinnamon Roll – $2.95 tax
Bus Fare – $3.00
Total – $8.70

Eating at the Getty is a little bit like Goldilocks visiting the home of the three bears – there are three options, but only one can be just right. If you want something fancy, perhaps a nice crab cake benedict with a hollandaise sauce (made from egg yolks and lemon) for Sunday brunch, then you’ll want to visit the Restaurant, located on the top level of the structure to the right of the Arrival Plaza (if you’re facing toward the museum).

If that sounds a little ridiculous to you, there are also snack bars that serve coffee, pastries and candy. I choose this option but ended up with cold coffee so bitter all the milk and sugar in the world couldn’t save it.

Bus Stops: Helpful tips for taking the Metro late at night

For the first time since I started the Bus Stops column, I took the bus at night. It was after 11 p.m. when I finally set foot in Westwood again, and the experience taught me a lot. For all of my fellow young bus riders, here are three helpful tips I learned while riding the Metro this weekend:

Bus Stops: Activist groups on Sunset Boulevard

This week I had the odd fortune of running into two very different activist groups on Sunset Boulevard while writing my weekly column “Bus Stops,” which you can read here.).

The empanadas from Empanada’s Place on Sawtelle Boulevard in Los Angeles come in a fried (but not greasy) dough shell, soft on the inside, but flaky and crispy on the outside.

Empanada’s Place offers 18 different kinds of empanadas, such as arabe, beef and corn empanadas.

The menu at Flavors of Belize includes salbute (shredded chicken topped with cabbage on a fried tortilla) and garnache (refried beans, tomato and onion sauce and strong Dutch cheese on a fried corn tortilla).

The nasi uduk is a rice dish served with turmeric yellow fried chicken, tofu, scrambled, shredded eggs and sayur asem (tamarind vegetable soup) served at Simpang Asia.

Originally I hadn’t planned on getting Russian food, which might be why I ended up in a run-down shopping center late at night, at a table near a bunch of people celebrating a birthday party with the help of a bottle of vodka.
