May 21, 2012 – Long Story Short gets a taste of the tea of Taiwan, the stories of Prime magazine’s 2012 spring edition and the spiritual messages behind spoken word poetry. As a new political club on campus, Bruins for Taiwan strives to raise awareness regarding the struggles Taiwan faces with being recognized as an independent country.

Ginny Wu, a second-year economics student, and Robin Lee, a second-year global studies student, talk about last Thursday’s event called “Tea 101 and Tea Ritual.”

Then, Ken Huang, a second-year psychology student and photo editor of Prime, shares the quirky stories featured in the magazine, which hits newsstands tomorrow.

To end the night, Long Story Short invites Adam Provinchain, a third-year mechanical engineering student, to share his spoken word poetry with a spiritual message.

Communications studies Professor Tim Groeling discusses the implications of this announcement. A few students give their reactions as well. Then, the English department’s Poetry Contest winners third-year English student Stefan Karlsson and fourth-year English student Gabriel Malikian share with us their pieces “So Long Frank” and “Fixing My Father’s Bandsaw.”

May 7, 2012 – To dye or to not dye? That is the question. Artist, curator, and educator Kathy Brew chats on the phone with Christyana Cabal about going from occasionally dying her hair to finally embracing her gray, curly locks. They discuss Brew’s project “Going Gray,” which explores today’s cultural attitudes towards aging and the ideas of maintaining youth. Her exhibit will open on Thursday at the Art | Sci Gallery from 5-7 p.m. as part of the “Art of Aging” symposium. In addition, she will also give a talk at the symposium, which is hosted by the UCLA Institute of Society and Genetics this weekend.

And lastly, ASUCLA might be upgrading the caliber of dining options in Ackerman Union by installing a sit-down restaurant that would serve alcohol. While some recognize the financial benefits and the “classiness” of the restaurant, some are cautious about the inclusion of alcohol on a dry campus. April 30, 2012 – From expression on the basketball courts to the concert halls, Long Story Short reviews a week of what it takes to perform for the crowd. On Friday, Cabal attended the senior music composition recitals and listened to compositions by Edward Ryan and Kirk Naylor, both fourth-year composition students, as well as Emad Borjian, a fifth-year ethnomusiciology student. Then, on Sunday, Erickson watched UCLA’s Spirit Squad auditions. She spoke with Mike Drell, a second-year art history and psychology student about the life of a cheerleader from a male’s shoes, followed by judge Ken Bencomo, who discusses the specifics of qualified cheerleading technique and showmanship.
