When fifth-year computer science student Alex Wong went to an open house for the Chinese Cultural Dance Club at UCLA, he didn’t know what he was getting into. MAY 16
For Jennifer Zhang, it wasn’t a matter of if her screenplay would be made into a film, it was a matter of when. APR 26
A young black boy is gunned down by a man who thought he looked “suspicious” in his hoodie. A Muslim American mother is beaten to death in her home, with a note reading, “go back to your country, you terrorist,” beside her. These murders of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and 32-year-old Shaima Alawadi have not only become catalysts for racial protest and debate across the nation, but also here at UCLA. APR 26
From being the assistant to fashion stylist Rachel Zoe to starring in his own Bravo reality television show, “It’s a Brad Brad World,” stylist Brad Goreski has made a giant leap in the fashion world, with clients such as Jessica Alba, Cameron Diaz and fashion brand Kate Spade. Bieber fever embodied in products
With the flick of the bangs and a wink of the eye, Justin Bieber has already gotten you to fall in love with him.
OK, that may not be the case for everyone, but for the large population of Bieber fans out there, this whole schtick has moved millions of units of Justin Bieber merchandise from the stores into the bedrooms of the average 9-year-old girl, or maybe the average 19-year-old girl. For every critic of the Bieber machine, there are tens of thousands of “Beliebers” willing to defend their mop-haired puppy – armed with their Bieber screen tees and matching duvet covers.
FEB 16Discovering the thrills of thrifting
I see so many fashion bloggers who wear thrifted clothes that it’s ridiculous. How can one be so stylish and yet be so economically conscious at the same time?
This is a conundrum that is more my speed, frugality-wise, so in this week’s Fashion or Whatever column, I discover the thrills of thrifting, and venture into one of Los Angeles’ best places for cheap vintage clothes, Jet Rag’s Sunday dollar sales. And I sure did realize how much people were so into thrifting. Especially hipsters.
So, what are your experiences thrifting?
FEB 9Golden Globes fashion a snooze fest
Another year, another awards show where everyone scrutinizes what the stars wear on the red carpet, even when they are all practically wearing the same thing. Well, everyone except for Helena Bonham Carter, who wore different shoes on each foot. Now that is a feat. (Pun so intended.)
In this week’s Fashion or Whatever column, I discuss the constant boredom seen on the awards show red carpet, and when I am talking about boring, I am not lying. Read about it here.
JAN 19Reality Sass: "America's Next Top Model" looks to live up to its name
I’ve had a long relationship with “America’s Next Top Model,” since way back when Tyra Banks was still on cordial terms with the first season winner, Adrianne Curry. I’ve watched the show for so long that I know the pattern that goes along with being the winner of the show: They are never really top models but more like America’s Next Mediocre Model who does wig modeling on the side.
OCT 4If there was a film equivalent of a badly autotuned top 40 song, “We the Party” would definitely be it, complete with a guest appearance by Snoop Dogg himself. APR 5
