Letters to the Editor

Editorial Board wrong about tax cuts

Just when I thought that everyone at UCLA could perform basic math problems, I picked up the Daily Bruin and read the editorial, “Tax cut would benefit rich before poor” (May 28). To my amazement, it seems as if the Editorial Board spouts nonsense liberal rhetoric without actually looking at its own facts.

A family with two children under the age of 17 and a $63,000 income will receive a tax break of $1,100. Due to University of California fee increases, sending a student to UCLA will cost $1,200 more. Simple math shows that with the tax break, the family will only have to bear $100 of the fee increase. Had the tax cut not been delivered, then all $1,200 would have to be shelled out. But according to the Editorial Board, this family is out of luck. Yeah, right.

In general, the Editorial Board may be correct that the rich would see the tax cut before the poor, but that’s because the poor hardly pay income taxes.Tom Hartmann Third-year, political science
