[Online Exclusive]: Medlock charged with two counts of felony DUI
While his teammates celebrated a Sun Bowl victory, UCLA placekicker Justin Medlock was charged with felony driving under the influence in a Dec. 10 accident in which a member of the women’s golf team was injured.
Medlock has been serving an indefinite suspension from the team and did not play in the bowl game.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced on Friday that Medlock was being charged with two counts of DUI causing injury, according to a press release from the DA's office.
Each count alleges Medlock inflicted "great bodily injury" to Hannah Jun, a member of the UCLA women's golf team and the lone passenger in Medlock's car.
Medlock, who was released on $10,000 bond shortly after his arrest on Dec. 10, will appear in Inglewood Superior Court on Tuesday. If convicted, he faces a prison term of up to six years.
Medlock was driving his 1998 Toyota Tacoma with Jun at 2:52 a.m. on Dec. 10 when his truck veered of Interstate 405 North and flipped over.
The Bruin football player walked away from the scene of the crash, leaving Jun in the car. Medlock, who suffered minor injuries in the accident, was later arrested by Inglewood police.
Rescue crews who arrived in the scene found Jun half out of the car. Her injuries included a fractured vertebra in her neck.
Police determined Medlock was driving with .08 percent alcohol in his blood. California law prohibits driving with a blood alcohol percentage of .08 or more.
Dorrell suspended Medlock on Dec. 11. "(Medlock) made a mistake and he understands that there are penalties when a player violates our rules," Dorrell said in a statement at the time.
