Letters to the Editor
Campus speeches are a waste As a UC San Diego alumnus who’s witnessed firsthand the self-congratulatory State of the Campus address delivered annually by our student government, I choked on my coffee at reading the Daily Bruin’s praise of ... Forget Clinton’s marginal victory in Indiana on Tuesday. Forget the implications it has for her campaign. Forget Obama’s 14-percent win in a state with nearly twice as many delegates as Indiana. As supporters of The Green Initiative Fund, we would like to address some statements made in the editorial published in Friday’s Daily Bruin, titled “Green initiative’s logistics are impractical” (May 2). Fair and free elections. Progressive lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. Concern for the environment. Equal rights for women. These phrases describe only one country in the Middle East: Israel. “Carne Asada is not a crime.” Undergraduate student government spends $3 million a year in student fee money, and they appoint dozens of students to important boards and committees on campus. As voting takes place this week, you’re going to hear a lot about the different slates’ ideas for next year’s Undergraduate Students Association Council. There is an issue that is less often discussed: What did they actually do for me this year? After nearly two decades of sounding the clarion call to progressivism from Kerckhoff’s towers, Students First! now risks looking out of touch and anachronistic.Clinton runs risk of ruining Democrats’ presidential chances
