Each year, through democratic elections, thousands of UCLA students choose leaders whom they trust to better our campus and improve the Bruin experience. According to our constitution, the Undergraduate Students Association Council was established to “fairly represent student interest, needs, and welfare,” and “promote the general educational welfare” among other laudable goals.
We believe that the constitution of the Undergraduate Students Association Council must be amended to pave the way for a more transparent, accountable and responsible vacancy process.
In an email statement to the campus community on May 16, Chancellor Gene Block stressed the importance of civil discourse in campus conversation, saying, “Political speech that stigmatizes or casts aspersions on individuals or particular groups does not promote healthy debate but debases it by trying to intimidate individuals and groups.”
By attempting to disguise political speech in a cloak of ethicality and morality, the Students for Justice in Palestine debased the healthy debate that should take place on our campus by intimidating two individuals, Lauren Rogers and Sunny Singh.
February’s student government meeting on divestment was an undeniably tense moment for everyone involved. On top of the already bitter atmosphere, straw votes, secret ballots and nine hours of public comment added to the tension, eroding the student body’s trust and respect for the Undergraduate Students Association Council.
